Three Lessons of Date Night

marriage, date night

After almost 14 years of marriage Steve and I still make time for date night. It wasn't something we planned for when we first started out in marriage. But after everything that went down a few years ago we now make time. And I think we've learned a bit about how to make date night work.

First: Start off excited. I know this sounds kind of silly, but its true. Whether the date is just a trip with out kids to the grocery store or a five star restaurant, either way get exited.

Second: be willing to compromise. As in I am not a sushi fan at all, but Steve is so I am willing to suck it up once in a while for him. Because I know he will do the same for me, Indian food, YUM!

Third: Sometimes its just about giving in. It may have taken Steve 14 years to quit buying white tennis shoes,  but he finally got hint. I have white tennis shoes, so he bought new grey ones, just to make me happy.

Yep, I think we have started to figure out this date night thing.

We are in between

Fridays I fluctuate between Five Minute Fridays and InstaFriday. But we are all community here, right? They can be combined into one post.
So I write for Five minute, no edits, no re dos and at the end I will see if there are pictures from this week that match the words of this week.

Topic: In Between

Enjoying the sun
In betwen seems to describe the state of life for us right now. In fact I could not pick more accurate words.
Steve is now inbetween jobs. Its not easy for any of us but especially him. He liked his company and what he did. But outsourcing has taken over. So he is in between.. And all those decissions that are made in that state can be overwhelming.
Mouse off at her 2nd summer camp
We are in between, along with my brother's family. As they moved in with us this week while they sit in a state between houses. Their house is getting built and their house sold quickly. Now we are in between with them as we make room and adjust projects to accomidate them. It will be fun to share in meals and family time but its still a change.
Mouse and her friend on a hike
Mouse, she is between childhood and teen. Tween has a new meaning to us here. All those changes, emotions and innocences rolled into one small woman child. Helping, guiding and letting go seem to be where we are at right now.

We are all stuck in the "in between".

Falling

Fridays I fluctuate between Five Minute Fridays and InstaFriday. But we are all community here, right? They can be combined into one post.
So I write for Five minute, no edits, no re dos and at the end I will see if there are pictures from this week that match the words of this week.

Topic: Fall
This week we were hit with bad news. The kind that hooks you by the knees like an old vaudeville act, dropping you the floor. Steve's job has been out-sourced. What does this mean? He is needing to find a new job.
My first reaction was a mix of anger and sadness. All of our plans...falling through. You see when I was looking to change careers I specifically applied to the University so we could work together and car pool. Well I got that job last Oct. and now....
As my Dad said the saying goes "Best laid plans of mice and men.."
That's when it hit me. It was our plan. It was the plans of mere men. Now we are falling to our knees. In prayer we seek God's wisdom for this change. We wait and watch for the new window to open as this door closes. Because we sometimes need to learn the hard way that there is a God infinitely more wiser than mice and men.

The pictures are just ones I took this week that are all better than the news from this week.

13 years

Today is the day Steve and I got married 13 years ago. It's been a crazy adventure. We haven't always taken the course God planned for our marriage. But I am glad we are getting back on track.

It was beautiful to spend this last week in Jamaica together celebrating with family.
Here is to 13 years and to 13 more.

Love you

Happy Birthday Mouse

It was ten years ago today that our lives changed. It's hard to believe ten years has already sped past us. Our little Princess is now pushing tween. How are lives have changed for the better because of you.

Your fierce determination to be your own person is inspiring to all who meet you. I pray you never loose that in the years to come. It took your Mommy way to long to figure out who she was, the pain in that I hope you never feel.

You are still our tiny child. Born a month early wearing doll clothes home you have struggled with being the smallest of your class. But someday my long legged beauty you will love the body you are in.

I pray today that this day brings you thoughts of past, present and future events that you for ever cherish.

Happy Birthday Mouse!

Love
Mom & Dad

Scooby Doo And Putt

Once a year Steve and I spend a day in costume and laughter with friends. Each year Minneapolis has a fun day of mini-golfing through the bars. But to take it to the next level you are asked to do it in costume. Which I think is my favorite part of the day.
I have been participating in this for the last four years but this year I think we out did our selves in authentic looking costumes.
Here is what we came up with. Me as Daphnee, Steve as Shaggy, Maggie as Velma and her husband Chris as Fred. Maggie at this point would probably like me to point out that Chris did have a big blonde wig he was suppose to wear but turned it down at the last minute. I like to point out that Maggie and I never buy pre-made costumes this is all individual pieces.
I chose Daphnee as I have the longest hair out of the group. To get it this orange I took some hair chalk and orange hairspray, then spent the first hour of my day making it orange. For the dress I took a purple thrift store find, shortened and added the pale purple stripes. Finishing it off with thrift store scarf and Target tights and purple shoes.
Maggie made sure we didn't forget little Scooby.
We always have such a good time with them.
Here's the The Mystery Machine!

What We Wore Wednesday

You can tell past WIWW pictures that I love scarves. It seems this trait has been passed down to Mouse. She was so excited to get this strawberry scarf, I was excited because it was $2! She thinks she looks so grown up in her coat and scarf.
Scarf: CJ Banks
Jacket: Target?
Dress: Children's Place
Shoes: Thrifted

I love to snap pictures of Steve after he takes mine for the WIWW. He just picked up this blue striped shirt, that I just love!

See I do love scarves! This one I showed before is my new favorite, the little owls are so cute. Then I got this plaid blazer and I wear the two together a bit to much I think, but I love it.
Scarf: Gift from Mom
Jacket: Target
Shirt: Stolen from Mom's closet
Pants: NY&Co
Boots: Macy's

Sharing our Testimony

Steve and I shared our testimony at church this Sunday. Here is what we shared.

Cassi: The spark hit the dry tinder so early. It was left alone no one cared enough to put it out, so it lay there gathering fuel. The winds of change igniting it further. Until it became a fire so swift and fierce that it devastated everything in its path. It ate away at the large trees that rooted the forest until all that was left was hallowed out husks of the past.
I wrote that two years ago the day after Steve and I realized our marriage had become a lie. As we each confessed to each other our wrongs, as we poured out our pain. I was left standing in the smoldering wilderness, choking on the smoky aftermath of what we have become. I want to blame him but I know I had done no better. We both left the fire smoldering under the dry leaves. As if ignoring it would make the fire go away, instead it spread its tentacles out to all areas of our lives, slowly destroying what it found.
Steve: We, as husband and wife, are weak. We have tried to live our lives the way we see fit and look where it got us. But now we are looking at strength from for a new source.
It is through the weakness that God will bring great things. We bow humbly before him boasting in the weakness of ourselves. It is not easy. Our society says it’s ok to walk away, but we decided to follow God’s plan for marriage.  Cassi and I talk that someday we hope God has a plan to use what we are learning together for his purpose. So he can make something beautiful from the pain.
Cassi: To make a marriage it takes workWhy do we feel that we should just know how to do it? We go to school a huge portion of our lives to prepare us for a career. We are mandated to take drivers ed. to become drivers. We attend birthing and parenting classes when we become pregnant. Certain areas of our lives we realize we need help in so why is it that with relationships we think we should be able to do it all on our own?
Steve: We realized we needed help. Professional help to teach us what to do. We went to back to school in away. We sought out a Christian counselor who worked with us to achieve some building blocks. We had no foundation any longer; we need those cornerstones again. Christ has been our personal cornerstones but not in our marriage. That is something we had to change.
Cassi: It has been amazing watching Steve open up to God and his calling for him as a husband and a Dad. I know we have a long way to go still but every day Steve reminds me to pray our future together. And for that I am grateful. I am reminded of the Sanctus Real song “Lead Me”. Thank you for hearing my cries. To see you fight for our marriage is amazing. And I know with God's help, I will not feel alone anymore. And that our house will finally be a home.
Steve: It has been a joy being a part of the change in Cassi and our family.  The changes include putting down or away distractions and spending more quality time together.  Making the effort to "get away" with family camping or weekend getaways, and spending more time just talking.
It's been almost two years to the day since we called on God make changes in our lives and marriage. This past September I got down on one knee again recommitting to Cassi and God that our marriage is worth fighting for. So with a new ring symbolizing that promise, we start 2013 with a passion to share how important marriage grounded in faith is.
Cassi: As in any real forest fires the regrowth has taken time and as the forest floor heals new vegetation starts to sprout up. We are focused on getting the roots to grow deep, strong, to not let the dry tinder pile around us, so we are not as susceptible to the sparks.

Baring it all

Fridays I fluctuate between Five Minute Fridays and InstaFriday. But we are all community here, right? They can be combined into one post.
So I write for Five minute, no edits, no re dos and at the end I will see if there are pictures from this week that match the words of this week.

Topic: Bare

Yesterday was the two year mark of the fires. The day our lives and marriage changed forever. The day we laid at God's feet begging for a miracle to bring us out of the suffocating smoke.

The regrowth of this forest hasn't been easy. We've had counseling, books and mentoring. We've done soul searching and baring to others and ourselves.

But its been worth every scream and tear to see where we are now. We are no longer the arrogant self serving people we were when we got married.

This Sunday Steve and I venture on to another path of this restoring process. We are baring are selves to our church family. We've been asked to give our testimony to the congregation. It will be the first time many of them ever hear there has been issues for us. It will be the first time we publicly present our story.

Pray that our story will impact those who are needing to hear God's restoring message.

What We Wore Wednesday

The holidays is the perfect time tor dress up. It is my favorite part of work Christmas parties all the pretty dresses. This year we had a work party for my job. It was right downtown over looking the river. It was great watching the snow fall over the river.
Steve and I went for simple black and silver. Dress I stole from my Mom's closet. The accessories scarf was from Target, the shoes DSW and the bag is from a vintage store.

Even Mouse got to dress up this year. She was involved with a local choir group during the holidays. This meant lots of dress up opportunities.
She decided on the scarf my Mom made her and the dress / jacket she wore for my brother's wedding. She looked beautiful if I do say so myself.

New Front Door

We have been in our house now going past seven years. It is the longest we have lived any where. So of course we I am going crazy with lack of a new house to decorate. So Steve did the next best thing for his new house loving wife.

He painted a new entry way!

Here is a quick before picture.
Ok, it really needed a new coat of paint, dang Minnesota weather.
Then since it's Minnesota and freezing he sealed off the entry way and warmed it up a bit so the paint would stick.

And then we had a whole new house. So excited with the way  it looks.
And it's holding up well through rain, winds and snow already.

Bench Remake

"Steven sit on this so no takes it" was my exact words to Steve when we saw this beauty at the local Goodwill. I could not believe how perfect it was. Ok. it may not have looked exactly like that when we saw it.
It was a little beat up and dirty but you could see the potential a mile away. I love the mustard seat and caned edges.
In truth it just need a fresh coat of paint and a good vacuuming. So that is what we did.
Steve started first with a primer coat.
I was really torn with what color to paint it. I wanted to be able to use it in our house and as a photo prop. At last we decided on a glossy black to bring in more black accents to our living room.
I am so thrilled with how it turned out.

InstaFriday - Halloween Pictures

Halloween at our house is much celebrated and decorated for, except this year it seemed to come up way to quick. Between camping late into the season and starting a new job the week before we just didn't seem to have time to get it together this year.

I did start Mouse off right with a Franken Mint cupcake.
Mouse was not to be without though. She plans her costume out much in advance of the season. Like she is planning out next years already. She loves getting dressed up and make believe.
I loved her Vet costume this year. Thanks to my tiny aunt who is a nurse, Mouse had all the costume pieces. It was like looking into her hoped for future. This has been Mouse's dream since she could talk. She talks about the college she will go to, to become a vet. She looks through books and reads about what a vet does. She is focused.

We did get a little of the house decorated. Here was my yearly addition to the decor.

How do you spend Halloween night? Steve takes Mouse out with the other neighbor husbands and their kids. I get the job of handing out candy. I grab a good book and this year some tea (it was cold) and wait for the kids.
Join up on either or both groups. Or just go check out what the others are sharing.

Recommitment

This weekend Steve and I took a trip to the North Shore (for those non-Minnesotans this means Lake Superior). We stayed at a small little B&B right on the shoreline. It was a cold weekend, but we still got in some hikes, shopping and dining. And of course some Geocaching.

But more importantly Steve got down on one knee and asked if I would still marry him. We talked about the last two years and the changes we've made. We talked about how we are committed to make a new start to our marriage and to our family.

Over twelve years ago we got engaged along these shores, it was nice to stand there again and know that we are in a better spot.
