Teaching Compassion

We have been apart of Compassion International for years. We joined up for numerous reasons and God's not so gentle push. But one of our main reasons was to teach Mouse.
She's our only child, for a while she was the only grandchild. You can imagine what her life was like, spoiled! But also not that global, we live in rural America.
We wanted to give her an understanding of how things were outside of her daily scope of life. Yes, we started that young (she was 7). But we felt that it needed to be started young. Before the other things in life got in the way of that ingrained teachings.
Being advocates for Compassion has increased that knowledge. Whenever Steve and/or I work a booth for them we try and take Mouse with us. She sees the table of cards laid out in front of her. Card after card of children waiting for help, help that we are trying to bring by talking to people who come to the booth. In order to work it, she has had to learn about the countries represented by those kids. She has had to learn about priority kids (kids waiting longer than 6 months for someone to sponsor them). She has had to learn about high risk kids, those living in countries with child slaves. Slaves, yes we are teaching out elementary kid about current slavery, not those that are just in her history books. She has had to talk to prospective sponsors about AIDS. Yes, AIDS she learned about AIDS. It's not taboo in our house. We speak about the diseases that can kill but don't have to with medication. She's now learning it in school, shouldn't she learn it at home first.
This past weekend she talked to adults without hesitation, with out shame, without fear about tough topics. She spoke clear and honestly and with Compassion about kids her own age that need help around the world.
With that we helped get 86 kids sponsored!!
At this compassionate child danced and teared up over the success.
I think its working, this teaching.
Check them out, make a child's Christmas this year, become a sponsor.

Compassion Weekend

It's been a while since I mentioned Compassion on this blog. We are still loving the organization and our sponsor child. This weekend Mouse and I got to show that love through working a booth at Lifeway Christian Bookstore.
It is so great Lifeway has agree to be apart of the Compassion mission and is putting Compassion information in theirs stores. To kick it off they had us advocates working booths this past Saturday.
Mouse and I were disappointed in the turn out at our store, only 1 child sponsored but we know it's just the start. Already one of the works was talking about sponsoring a child.
As people come through the store and see the sign it will be a reminder for them of the kids in need around the world. And you never know the sign might be the last turn on their "pickle jar."
I hope for some of you this post is your last turn.
Go now as sponsor a child in need through Compassion.

Little Ears

So I write for Five minute, no edits, no re dos and at the end I will see if there are pictures from this week that match the words of this week.

Topic: Listen
"O be careful little eyes what you see
O be careful little eyes what you see
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little eyes what you see

O be careful little ears what you hear
O be careful little ears what you hear
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little ears what you hear..."

The song goes on but this post is about Listen, so I can end there. It's amazing how true these words ring out to me this week.
Last weekend we worked at the Compassion booth during an all day Christian music festival. Surrounding us were the songs of praise and worship.
But as we looked down at the small faces on sheets of paper I was reminded of so much.
Freedom to hear the worship
Out loud in PUBLIC, praises to God
So many can not listen to the word of God without fear.
As I shared hugs and laughter with my daughter and husband
I looked down again and remembered that there are hundreds of little ears not hearing laughter and love in their homes.
The contrast was extreme, the heart hurt was intense for these little ones.
I do not know

But God knows and he listened to my heart, to THEIR hearts
And over a 130 children were sponsored that day.
Praising God they listened

Compassion International

This past month we have been doing our first set of advocating for Compassion International. Earlier this spring Steve and I started out at Acquire the Fire youth conference. It was great, we were able to meet Innocence. Innocence grew up with sponsorship program in Uganda.  We were also able to sign up quite a few people for the program.

Then Mouse decided she wanted to work a booth. So on her birthday weekend we all worked a booth at another youth conference. Mouse did such a great job explaining the advocacy program to people. Here she is working the booth.

Compassion International - Zaida Update

It's been a while since I have posted about Zaida. You can check out how we became sponsors here. Check it out, then come back.

OK, back good.

I still sometimes get lost in thought on how different our two worlds are. I think of Zaida's mother often. Does she fear the same things? What are her hopes and dreams for her daughter? What is it like for her being connected to another Mom thousands of miles away? Does she love us as much as we love her little girl?

Someday I hope to go on a Compassion Blog trip to answer all those questions, to visit the little girl who change our perspective.

Zaida is doing great. The letters we are receiving from her are becoming more thought out. One of my favorite letters was when Zaida gave us a recipe for hen soup. I hope to adapt it to make it for Mouse one of these days.

Remember October is the month to get the Christmas donations to Compassion. There is a lag time in dollars to presents being available at Christmas so get your donations in soon. If you are not a sponsor yet, what better Christmas present to give a child.

Compassion International- Phillipines

Some of you may have already seen the notices. But for some of you this may be the first time you hear about it.
Compassion International has a group of sponsors/advocates/bloggers (yes they hold all three titles) just returned from a trip to the Phillipines.

They come from all areas with different thoughts and hearts but they all go for one reason. To see what God has called them to be apart of. View for themselves the poverty that they have tried to help with. Some of you may ask where that $38 a month goes? What does it do? How can I be impactfully?

Read these blogs (listed below) let them show you through their eyes how impactful you can be.
We have been involved with Compassion for a bit now and have recently become advocates. Being an Advocate really just means you take a pledge to talk about Compassion and poverty and how the love of God can change it. You can read about our journey here. My goal one day is to take my family to Guatemala and visit Zaida.

What I Wore Wednesday - Compassion Style

As I posted this weekend, Mouse and I spoke at church about Compassion International. It was a great service. I shared this post. Then Mouse talked about our sponsor child, my Parents child and her Sunday school classes'. She did such a great job.
For hosting a Compassion Sunday, Compassion International sends you a t-shirt. Well, Mouse wanted one too. So, I picked up a beige t-shirt from the boys section at Target and took it in to fit her. I then printed off Compassion International's saying on to transfer paper. It was then ironed on to her shirt.
This comes as perfect timing since my advocate application was just approved through Compassion International. I am now an official advocate, meaning I am available to host Compassion Sundays at other's churches, organizations or groups. I will also be helping at Compassion boothes at concerts and community festivals. We are all very excited. It is something that we as a family can do together. Check out their site and learn more for yourself, just click here.

**Also remember we have a Dayspring Giveaway going on, click here to see more***

Inspire Me - Compassion International

It's been a while since we've talked about Zaida on this site. For those that don't know Zaida is our sponsor child from Compassion International. See how we can to this decision here.
Zaida
This Sunday, we are taking our call to Compassion to our church. Mouse and I will be talking about Compassion and Zaida. We are also hosting a Compassion Sunday, which means we will have files of children out on a table praying that someone will feel led to sponsor them. Pray with us that all these children find a sponsor this weekend.

If you feel a calling for Compassion to please go to there site, (HERE). But maybe finances aren't there right now for a long term commitment. Don't worry there are other areas to help with. Sarah Markley is doing a donation drive right now for Compassion. You can view her Team San Diego here. In response to her run for Compassion numerous Etsy shop owners are hosting sales were the proceeds will go to Sarah's run, check it out here. Like this bracelet!
Oh how I wish I could buy this right now!
Maybe finance are even tighter than that. Remember you can become a letter writer. Yes, something as simple as a letter can make a huge difference in a child's life. See Gypsy Mama's post on Lame Letter Writers, here. If you have dry eyes after reading that post, shame on you!
But if all you are able to give right now is prayers, we will gladly take those too. Please pray for the kids this weekend, and the congregation of our church that they fill lead to Compassion this weekend. Thank you

Calling for Compassion

I am one of those pickle jar people sometimes when it comes to following God's call. Please tell me, you have heard of the pickle jar! No.. OK let me tell you..

Someone shut the pickle jar way to tight. So you try and try to open it, then you pass it on to someone else to try. They turn and turn the lid but it won't budge. They pass it off to someone else and so on until, YES, the jar opened. People can be this way too. You might be the first person to tell someone something and you planted a small seed in the back of someones mind (or loosened the lid a little). The next person loosened it a little more. But then finally the idea sticks for that person. This doesn't mean you didn't have any help in the situation, everyone worked together to open the jar.

To get back to me (because this is my blog) I am such a jar sometimes. It was probably a year ago or so that I heard my Pastor (or maybe someone talking at my church can't remember) talk about having their child select a Compassion child to sponsor and how they used this to increase their child's awareness of the less fortunate and learn responsibility and finally a good dose of humanitarianism. I thought at the time that is great, I am going to have to do that.

And months go by.. I put the idea away. To add one more financial bill to our house, my daughter is too young, this will be a long term commitment,  all these things gave me doubt and excuses to put it off.
Then this summer my friend Sarah tells me about how she went and visited her Compassion child in Honduras. Again there is that Compassion thing getting brought to the forefront. But again I put up excuses: Sarah is a Pastor's child she is always more giving, she is single without a mortgage and etc... I push God's voice away again.

Then my friend Kandi starts a blog. I know nothing about Compassion here, right? Wrong. I feel immediately led to start blogging again, something I haven't done in a year or so. I tell her I am starting back up because I feel more accountable if I have to write about it for the world to read. Then through reading her blog list I find Nester. Oh she has a beautiful decorating style, but wait she is apart of this online group called (in)Courage. So I checked it out. What do I find an online community of Christian women working towards their life goals and supporting one another. And wait you guessed it Compassion is there to. Two of the woman are just finishing up a trip to a Compassion site and blogged about here and here.

It's done the jar is open! No more excuses no more push backs. I went home and told S and Mouse about this idea that God put on my heart over a year ago. Mouse is all for, she has figured out how she will divide up her allowance so $2 will go towards the sponsorship and she can keep $1. Then Mouse tells me how she has to write letters in school each day and the teacher said she can write to who ever she wants. She says she will write to the child we pick everyday. She is already planning what she wants to send for Christmas. Her enthusiasm is so contagious. God, why was I so hesitant? Her and I discuss locations, at first we wanted to do Bolivia since we have friends that are preparing to move there as missionaries. I wanted to look at Brazil also since that is where I went on a mission trip. When we start looking at the children, Mouse wanted to choose all of them. She asked what the little heart on their picture means. I tell her that means they have been waiting over 6 months for someone to sponsor them. Mouse is adamant that we choose one with a heart. "Why should they wait any longer" she asked. Good question, sweetheart. We looked for a girl who is the same age as Mouse. I want her to feel like a sister to this child and have commonalities to show her that poverty, language and foreign country doesn't mean you have nothing in common. Then we see her, she is 8 and helps takes care of her families animals (just like Mouse) and she loves swimming and singing (just like Mouse).

Meet Zaida!
Age: 8
Gender: Female
Region:  Central America and Caribbean
Country: Guatemala
Program: Seguidores de Jesús Student Center
Personal and Family Information:
Zaida lives with her father and her mother. At home, duties include caring for animals. Her father is employed as a farmer and her mother maintains the home. There are 6 children in the family. Swimming and singing are Zaida's favorite activities. In primary school her performance is average and she also regularly attends church activities.
Please pray for her.

I have never felt so proud of my own child as I do today. She is learning that there are children out there that need help and that she can make a difference. She is adding one more person to her prayers at night, we all are. And maybe next time it won't take quite so long for the pickle jar to open, when God calls.
Do  you feel the call towards Compassion? To sponsor? To write a letter? Really it can be as easy as just writing letters. We all know the importance of positive feed back is to a child. Do you have what it takes to make a child's day? If so become a letter writer today, click here!
